Vital Life Services Relocates to Former Headquarters of Controversial Your Black Muslim Bakery
Oakland, CA (September 9, 2008) – On September 13, 2008, from 4:00-8:00pm, Vital Life Services will celebrate the relocation of its offices to 5836 San Pablo Avenue in Oakland, formerly headquarters to Your Black Muslim Bakery, with a party and fundraiser. The gala event will serve as an invitation of healing to the Oakland neighborhood that remains traumatized barely a year after Oakland Post journalist, Chauncey Bailey, was murdered, allegedly by a member of Your Black Muslim Bakery.
Vital Life Services is a non-profit, Bay Area organization that offers critical services to its clients, including: provision of meals, arrangement for transportation, housing assistance, case management and mental health care services.
The building was completely renovated by its owner and landlord, Oakland businessman Kurt Zimmerman, longtime supporter of Vital Life Services. The move would not have been possible without his generosity and absolute commitment to the agency’s mission.
According to Mr. Zimmerman, “Vital Life Services is just that – a vital part of the community. I am proud to be affiliated with this organization, which addresses the needs of the underserved with grace and dedication. The staff and volunteers are truly remarkable. I will continue to do whatever I can to contribute to the ongoing success of Vital Life Services.”
Peggy Bush, longtime Executive Director of Vital Life Services says, “All of our work is done with our clients in mind. This move will enable us to maintain and expand our efforts, and we and our clients will introduce a positive spirit to the neighborhood. We couldn’t be more excited about our new home and we are very, very grateful to Kurt for making the move reality.”
Attendees at the fundraiser will include the following Honorary Chairs: The Honorable Ron Dellums, Mayor, City of Oakland; The Honorable Sandré Swanson, Member, California State Assembly; and The Honorable Jane Brunner, Member, Oakland City Council. The Honorable Barbara Lee, Member, U.S. House of Representatives, will also be recognized as an Honorary Chair, though she is unable to attend.
A representative of AT&T will present a generous donation to cover the cost of the new phone system. Food and drink will be provided by local businesses, including California Rose Catering, Buena Vista Winery, Bear Republic Brewery, Metromint Water and Excellent Packaging.
The event will include a silent auction, with items for bid including a weekend Markleeville getaway, a week’s lodging in Hawaii, a case of assorted wines and others.
Vital Life Services remembers and honors Mr. Bailey and will continue his important efforts to make the Oakland neighborhood a safe and positive place to live and work.
